Kozhikode: Eleven persons, three of them local CPM functionaries, were sentenced to life imprisonment in the sensational T P Chandrasekharan murder case by a special court here on Tuesday.
The Special Additional Sessions Court (Marad cases) at Eranhipalam in Kozhikode awarded life imprisonment and imposed a fine ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. one lakh to 11 of the 12 accused including three leaders of the CPI (M) in the murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T.P. Chandrasekharan at Onchiyam on May 4, 2012.
Writing the judgment on Tuesday, Justice R. Narayana Pisharadi sentenced M.C. Anoop, Manoj Kumar (alias) Kirmani Manoj, N.K. Sunil Kumar (alias) Kodi Suni, T.K. Rajeesh, K.K.Mohammed Shafi, Annan Shijith, and K. Shinoj to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000.
They were found guilty under Section 302 (murder), 143 (unlawful assembly) , 147 (rioting) and 149 ( every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
P.V. Rafeeque (18th accused) who was found guilty under Section 109 (abetment) was awarded life imprisonment and a fine of Rs one lakh while M.K. Pradeepan aka Lambu (31st accused) under Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of IPC was awarded three years in prison and Rs. 20,000.
The accused would have to undergo additional one year to two years rigorous prison if the accused failed to pay the fine. If the penalty amount is realized, a sum of Rs. 3 lakh should be given to K.K. Rema, widow of Chandrasekharan and Rs 2 lakh to Abhinand, son of Chandrasekharan, the court said.
