9 killed, 28 injured in three blasts in BaghdadBaghdad: Nine people were killed and at least 28 injured today in a series of explosions near a high-security government area in central Baghdad, security officials said.

Two car bombs and a bomber wearing a suicide belt hit locations on the perimeter of the Green Zone, an area that houses key government institutions and embassies, officials and witnesses said.

One of the blasts took place in a car park opposite the Foreign Ministry, officials said. Security forces blocked streets leading into the Green Zone after the blasts.

According to UN estimates, 8,868 people were killed in 2013, Iraq’s highest annual death toll in five years.
