Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha appointed as Thailand’s PM

Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha appointed as Thailand’s PM60-year-old Thai Junta leader general Prayuth Chan-ocha had been elected as Prime Minister in the Parliament on Thursday. This move had been widely expected as since he seized the power in May.

In a surreal session in Bangkok’s once disputatious legislature, MPs handpicked by the military, including many serving officers, stood up one by one to confirm the putsch leader as their choice without debate or dissent.

A live television broadcast of the parliamentary session showed that Prayuth has won at least half the votes, the required number needed to secure his nomination.

He was the only one who had been nominated.

His appointment will need to be formally approved by Thailand’s king.
