Odisha floods Death toll rises to 45, over 33 lakh people affectedPuri: Death toll due to floods in Odisha climbed to 45 and number of people affected by the deluge to over 32.9 lakh on Sunday as the situation improved gradually with receding water level in many areas.

So far, 5,313 villages spread over 23 districts have been ravaged by the floods.Across the state, more than 5,300 villages have been affected with 460 of them marooned by heavy flood waters. The downpour has affected 3, 22,163 hectares of agricultural land as well.

Reports said overall 32.9 lakh persons have been affected by the delugeReports quoted Deputy Relief Commissioner Prabhat Ranjan Mohapatra, as saying that the delta region of the Mahanadi river system has been primarily affected.

The government has said that it is doing its best to handle the crisis with 40 teams from both state and national disaster response forces dispatched to affected areas. Free kitchens at 200-odd places coupled by over 100 medical teams and 365 boats to help those affected by the floods are part of the government’s rehabilitation plans.

However, what may prove to be an impediment to the government’s plans, is the Met department’s forecast for more rain in the state.

The highest number of casualty’s occured in Bargarh district, followed by Mayurbhanj district. Flood deaths were also reported in Bhadrak and Sambalpur, it said, adding, deaths were mainly caused by drowning in swirling waters and wall collapse.
