Supreme Court dismisses Nithyananda’s plea against potency test in 2010 rape case

Supreme Court dismisses Nithyananda’s plea against potency test in 2010 rape case NEW DELHI: Controversial self-proclaimed godman Nithyananda will have to undergo potency test in a 2010 rape case with the Supreme Court today dismissing his plea challenging the Karnataka high court’s order directing him to take the medical test.  A bench headed by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai refused to give any relief to Nithyananda.

The 36-year-old was arrested in 2010 in Himachal Pradesh and is being tried in Bangalore. The man who was treated by thousands as a spiritual guru told the city court that is trying him that he is like a child and not capable of having sex. The court then ordered a series of medical tests, which he appealed against in different courts.

A US-based woman has also alleged that she was sexually abused by Nithyananda for five years, a charge denied by him. Other women disciples then claimed that they had been asked to have sex with him and his associates.

Observing that Nithyananda had been granted regular bail, the high court in the July 16 order had made it clear that he should be taken into custody only for the limited purpose of subjecting him to medical test and for collecting voice and blood samples, if he voluntarily failed to appear before the investigating officer.
