Raipur: The Chhattisgarh Police has arrested surgeon Dr RK Gupta who conducted the failed sterilisation surgeries which claimed the lives of 15 women and left over 50 hospitalised. Dr Gupta is the first person to be arrested in the Bilaspur tragedy case.
15 of 83 women who were operated by Doctor RK Gupta have died so far. Gupta was arrested from the Baloda Bazar area. The arrest comes after; Chief Minister Raman Singh on Tuesday ordered suspension of Dr Gupta and directed the police to file a FIR against him.

A three-member committee has been constituted to investigate the incident even as four health officials including two senior doctors – Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bilaspur RK Bhange, laparoscopic surgeon Dr RK Gupta, State Programme Convener, family planning, Dr KC Urao and Block Medical Officer, Takhatpur, Dr Pramod Tiwari – were suspended in this connection.
The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of each of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those undergoing treatment, the cost of which will be borne by the government.
A seven-member team of doctors from AIIMS, New Delhi, today visited Bilaspur to attend the victims of a botched sterilisation procedure at a state-run camp which claimed the lives of 13 women and left nearly 69 others ill, some of them critical.
