New York: Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of United Nation had called on Pakistan government to restore the death penalty ban.
He had called the Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif to bring an end to the executions of convicts and restore a moratorium on the death penalty.
Spokesperson of Ban on Friday said, Ban Ki-moon spoke over the phone with Sharif on December 25 and reiterated his condolences to the people, government and communities affected by the school attack.
Ban’s appeal follows Pakistan’s recent decision to lift a six-year moratorium on the use of the death penalty following this month’s terrorist attack on a school in Peshawar which claimed the lives of 150 people, mostly children.
The Secretary-General and the Prime Minister “noted the importance of democracy, rule of law as well as the need for an independent judiciary and the respect for the sentiments of the people of Pakistan,” it said adding that Ban welcomed the Sharif’s assurance that all legal norms would be respected.
Notify that UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad Al Hussein had also condemned Pakistan’s decision earlier this week.
Notify that government of Pakistan had ordered the death penalty after the terror attack of Peshawar army school where six terrorists had massacre 150 people including more than 132 children.
