New Delhi: The 28-year-old India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin completed 1000 runs in Test cricket. Ashwin scored a well made 50 against Australia in the fourth Test at the SCG in Sydney on Friday and completed the feat.
Ashwin became the third fastest player in Test history to record a score of 1000 runs and take 100 wickets at the same time. He achieved the feat in 24 Tests. Former England all-rounder Ian Botham (21) and India batsman Vinoo Mankad (23) had achieved the mark in fewer Tests.
India were bowled out for 475 runs as Ashwin played a valuable innings to make sure the visitors didn’t concede more than 100-run lead. He shared a vital 65-run partnership with Bhuvneshwar Kumar to frustrate the Aussies who scored a mammoth 572 in their first innings.
It was the off-spinner’s fourth fifty in Tests. Ashwin has managed 2006 runs in 24 Tests with two hundreds and a career average of over 36 runs. He has also managed to take 116 wickets at the same time.
Ashwin who had managed just one wicket in Australia’s first innings, managed to get David Warner for the second time in a row that edged to Murali Vijay at slips, in the host’s second innings. He then got Shane Watson to register 10 wickets in an away series.
