New Zealand: The ICC World Cup 2015 has been a tournament that has seen many a records tumble already, and it continued on Thursday when four of Bangladesh’s batsmen scripted the second-highest run-chase ever completed by a World Cup side after Ireland’s stunning victory over England in Bangalore in 2011 to beat Scotland by six wickets in the 27th match of the tournament in Nelson.
Scotland set Bangladesh 319 to win Thursday after posting 318-8, an innings built around a record-breaking 156 of opener Kyle Coetzer. Iqbal’s innings of 95 from 100 balls, which was the highest by a Bangladeshbatsman in a World Cup match, and his partnership of 139 with Mohammad Mahmudullah (62) established the strong pace that was necessary for Bangladesh to achieve its target with 11 balls to spair.
Bangladesh came into this match with three points from as many matches, having a tangible shot at making the quarterfinals ahead of England, whom it plays next. Iqbal and Mahmudullah consolidated with a solid second-wicket partnership of 139 off 130 balls to takeBangladesh to 144 in the 24th over before Iain Wardlaw, the medium pacer, went past the defence of Mahmudullah, who scored a run-a-ball 62.
