New Delhi: One of the convicts of 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape had given the controversial statement and blamed the victim for the brutal sexual assault and for her death.
Mukesh Singh in an interview from jail to a BBC documentary had claimed that had Nirbhaya and her friend not tried to fight back. He said that the gang would not have not have inflicted the savage beating, which led her to death.
He also described the killing of girl as an “accident”. Singh said, “When being raped, she shouldn’t fight back. She should just be silent and allow the rape. Then they’d have dropped her off after ‘doing her’, and only hit the boy.”
On the fateful night of December 16, 2012, Nirbhaya and her friend were returning home after watching a cinema when they boarded a bus in which six people, including the driver brutally raped her and thrashed her friend.
The girl later died from her injuries while undergoing emergency treatment in Singapore. The incident was widely condemned and generated widespread national and international coverage.
All the accused were arrested and charged with sexual assault and murder. One of the accused, Ram Singh, died in police custody on 11 March 2013 in the Tihar Jail.
One of the accused who was a juvenile at the time of the incident was convicted of rape and murder and given the maximum sentence of three years’ imprisonment in a reform facility.
Notable that the four other accuses were found guilty of rape and murder and three days later were sentenced to death by hanging on 10 September 2013.
