Colombo: Passports of 74 Indian nationals had been seized by the Government of Sri Lanka who were working at a plywood factory near Colombo.
The Indian nationals have reportedly been charged with working in the island-nation without valid work visas.
The Immigration Department and Emigration in Sri Lanka took the action against the Indian workers for holding tourist visas and working illegally in the country.
Officials of the department said that the passports will be returned to the Indian nationals after they produce return plane tickets for India. The department also said that action will be taken against the company for violating visa norms.
Notify that the Indian company has been registered with Sri Lanka’s Board of Investment.
It had also been notable that Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi is on the visit of three nations including Sri Lanka and will reach there on Friday and this action of Immigration Department may create a rift in between the nations and may affect the meeting of PM with Lankan counterpart.
