New Delhi: A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.9 on Richter scale and a series of aftershocks struck Nepal on Saturday. The quakes also jolted parts of North and Northeast India. Widespread damage has been reported from Nepal.

- Another aftershock has hit Nepal, now total of 16 excluding the first earthquake.
- Reuters has quoted a Nepal tourism official as saying that an avalanche has buried a part of Nepal Everest base camp after quake and eight people have died in the incident.
- Reporters on the ground say most of the buildings and temples that have collapsed in Nepal in the wake of the earthquake are old ones. Most of the newly-built structures have managed to withstand the tremors.
- According to the MoD spokesperson, one C-130J Superhercules aircraft of the Indian Air Force is on its way to Kathmandu with NDRF teams for relief and rescue efforts. More flights will be undertaken to Nepal to carry medical teams and doctors.
- Ministry of Defence spokesperson Sitanshu Kar has tweeted that an Indian Army Everest expedition team along with Sherpas are safe.

- The USGS has again revised the magnitude of the first earthquake to 7.8. Also, so far 15 aftershocks have been recorded in Nepal with magnitudes ranging from 4.5 to 6.6.
- Climbers on Mount Everest were also caught in the major earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday. “We got caught in an earthquake on Everest. We are both ok…snowing here so no choppers coming,” an AFP reporter said in an SMS on approach to base camp while on assignment.
