Kolkata: Shortly after voting began for West Bengal civic polls, incidents of violence were reported from several areas including Burdwan district where a TMC worker was shot dead. Around 74 lakh people are eligible to vote for 763 candidates who are contesting civic polls this year.A total of 35 companies of central forces, besides state forces have been deployed to ensure peaceful polling,” State Election Commissioner SR Upadhyay said.
Trinamool leaders alleged that the attackers who open fired are backed by Congress, as Katwa municipality is controlled by Congress and Trinamool is trying to make a dent into Congress bastion. Voters who had gone out to vote rushed back home, as bombs were hurled at random and firing took place even near the Katwa police station.
In Basirhat of North 24-Parganas, a Congress candidate, Sukesh Ghosal, was also slashed with a razor as he tried to prevent rigging. He is admitted to a hospital. Allegations of booth capturing are also in reported. Three people were inuring due to Police lathi-charge. In Titagarh there were firing in two wards in which a voter who was injured who was later admitted to RG Kar hospital.
A person was also injured at Bongaon in North 24-Parganas. Bombing was also reported from Sonarpur in South 24-Parganas. Congress MLA Apurba Sarkar was spotted assaulting an alleged outsider in Kandi of Murshidabad.
