Thiruvananthapuram: Congress candidate KA Sabarinathan on Tuesday notched up an emphatic victory in the Aruvikara Assembly by-election in Kerala. He was ahead of his rivals when the counting of votes crossed the half way mark.
He had defeated a former minister of CPI-M’s M Vijayakumar by more than 10,000 votes.
The assembly constituency witnessed a triangular contest between the Congress, the CPI-M and the BJP.
Though BJP’s O Rajagopal improved the party’s vote share, he was pushed to the third spot in a triangular contest.
The by-election was necessitated by the death of former Speaker G Karthikeyan. To cash in on a sympathy wave, Congress fielded his son Sabarinadhan, a former official of Tata Trust.
