New Delhi: A man who changed the course of the future of India with his ideas of non-violence and political and religious peace, Mahatma Gandhi is a name held in reverence even after seven decades since his demise. The number of lives he impacted is numerous, and the ideas he helped shape develop are relevant even today.
Whether or not one endorse the philosophy propounded by Gandhi, it is impossible not to be intrigued by the novel concepts he introduced during his lifetime. A leader by example, his “experiments with truth” and struggles to maintain a simple life has been an inspiration to many.
Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday (Gandhi Jayanti or Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti) is a gazetted holiday in India on October 2 each year. It marks the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth on October 2, 1869. Gandhi is remembered for his contributions towards the Indian freedom struggle.
Even after seven decades of his demise, Mahatma Gandhi inspires thousands of people across the world. His ideals of non-violence and political and religious peace has been hailed globally. India is all set to celebrate the birth anniversary of the father of the nation on Friday, 2 October.
Born in Gujarat in 1869 to Karamchand Gandhi and Putlibai, Bapu has been hailed as the symbol of peace, non-violence and freedom. He accompanied Gandhi in his first fast at Phoenix in 1913. He also accompanied Gandhi and his wife Kasturbha on their final voyage from South Africa to London in 1914.Gandhi and Kallenbach called each other as “Upper House” and “Lower House” respectively.
Kallenbach planned to accompany Gandhi to India in 1914, but with the outbreak of World War I he was interned as an enemy alien at detention camps and shifted to the Isle of Man as a prisoner of war from 1915 to 1917. He died in 1945 and left a portion of his considerable estate for South African Indians.
