New Delhi: Google has today dedicated its doodle to the first woman president of Indian National Congress Annie Besant. The doodle celebrates 168th birth anniversary of Besant, the British woman who came to India and made the country her home.
The doodle has a caricature of a gray-haired Besant, sitting on a chair with the newspaper she started in the country, ‘New India’. Besant was born on October 1, 1847 in London to Irish immigrant parents. She first came to India in 1888 and stayed in the country till her death on September 20, 1933. She was 85-years-old then.
In a ‘New India’ article in 1918, Besant proclaimed her love for India. She wrote, “I love the Indian people as I love none other, and… my heart and my mind… have long been laid on the alter of the Motherland. A staunch supporter of Indian National movement, Besant launched Home Rule League with Lokmanya Tilak in 1916. She was also actively involved in social work in India and in establishing several educational institutions.
