Chennai: Due to incessant rainfall in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu, train services have been severely affected, leaving normal lives disrupted on Tuesday. Many travellers were disturbed and unhappy as their trains got cancelled by the Southern Railways.
Roads have got damaged due to rainfall and that is why train services have also got affected. People are very disturbed,” a disgruntled passenger said. We had planned to go to the Tirupati but unfortunately the train has been cancelled. The Southern Railways has cancelled many trains,” said another passenger. Due to the incessant rainfall, the death toll has increased to 95.
Director of Regional Metrological Department SR Ramanan had earlier said that since the cyclone currently rests near Sri Lanka, heavy rains will continue for the next three days in Tamil Nadu. The Army’s help has been sought to rescue stranded people at nearby Tambaram, she said. “I have allocated Rs 500 crore towards relief and rehabilitation with immediate effect,” she said.
The Army and Air Force have been deployed for rescuing stranded citizens in Kancheepuram district, where torrential rains have left residents marooned, even as rain water inundated a large part of suburban Tambaram locality here.
IAF helicopters from the Air Force station at Tambaram carried out six sorties and evacuated 22 persons last night they said, adding, food packets and water were air dropped. The army was also now involved in the evacuation process, they added.
With Tamil Nadu hit by monsoon fury causing flood and inundation, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa yesterday announced allocation of Rs 500 crore towards relief and rehabilitation. Jayalalithaa said that besides spending for relief and rehabilitation, the allocation would also be used for disbursement of solatium to affected people.
