New Delhi : A day after the Supreme Court reinstated Alok Verma as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi nominated Justice AK Sikri to be part of the Selection Committee that will decide on Verma’s fate at the agency for the remainder of his tenure till 31 January.
The Centre had sent Verma on forced leave for 77 days through a much-criticised, late-night order on 23 October, 2018.
In its order on Tuesday, the Supreme Court had restrained Verma from making any major policy decision till the Central Vigilance Commission completes its investigation into the corruption charges against him.
Justice SK Kaul, who had pronounced the judgement for CJI Gogoi, had said that the high-powered Selection Committee is to meet within seven days and decide on Verma’s fate.
The Selection Committee also comprises Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, taking the place of the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Along with Sikri, they are scheduled to meet at Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi at 8 pm on Wednesday. However, the meeting is likely to be postponed as Kharge has requested the government to reschedule it to Friday, citing prior engagements.
The CBI director’s two-year tenure at the agency ends on 31 January.
