NewDelhi: In a tragic incident, at least 18 people, mostly labourers, died after a truck rammed into a parked bus near Ram Sanehi Ghat in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. As per Satya Narayan Sabat, Additional Director General (ADG), Lucknow Zone, 25 people injured in the accident have been hospitalised.
“A truck rammed into a bus near Ram Sanehi Ghat In Barabanki, late last night. About 18 casualties were reported with many passengers sustaining injuries. A total of 25 injured have been admitted to the district hospital,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took note of the horrific incident and has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from PMNRF for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the tragic accident. The Prime Minister also announced that the injured will get Rs 50,000 each for their treatment.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed condolences for the deceased. The Chief Minister directed the concerned officials to reach the accident site and ensure that the injured people receive proper treatment and directed to provide financial assistance to the deceased’s kin.
“The death of people in a road accident in Ram Sanehi Ghat area of district Barabanki is very sad. My condolences are with the bereaved family. Praying to Lord Shri Ram to grant the departed souls a place at his feet and speedy recovery to the injured,” Adityanath tweeted in Hindi.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of Lok Sabha Om Birla also expressed grief over the demise of 18 people. “It is very saddening to know that a large number of people died after a truck rammed into a bus in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki. I express great sympathy to the family members of the deceased. May God gives peace to the departed souls and courage to family members of the deceased to bear the pain,” Birla tweeted in Hindi.
The horrific accident took place when a bus carrying labourers from Bihar was returning from Haryana. The double-decker bus, on the Kalyani River bridge on the Ayodhya border, was halted following an axle breakdown after which the driver had parked the bus on the roadside and asked the labourers to rest while he was repairing the bus. Some of the passengers remain seated inside the bus while several others were resting on the road in front of the parked bus.
Due to heavy rains and poor visibility, a speeding truck rammed into the parked bus from behind crushing at least 18 labourers to death and injuring around 25 others. According to the police, the rescue operation to recover bodies stuck under the bus is underway.
“The bus driver had asked passengers to rest while he was repairing the bus. Soon after, a truck collided with the parked bus resulting in many casualties,” ADG Sabat further added.
After the accident, the national highway was jammed for five kilometres and officials rushed to the spot to rescue the victims and also clear the highway. Among the deceased, Suresh Yadav, Indal Mahto, Sikandar Mukhiya, Monu Sahni, Jagdish Sahni, Jai Bahadur Sahni, Baijnath Ram and Balram have been identified so far.
