Shillong: At a time when the Congress party is struggling with exits, defections and political tussle in several states, including Punjab and Chhattisgarh, a fresh turmoil is likely to hit the party in Meghalaya as former chief minister Mukul Sangma is likely to jump ship.
Speculation is rife that Sangma and and about a dozen other MLAs of the Congress party from Meghalaya are expected to switch over to the Trinamool Congress, the ruling party in West Bengal.
As per sources, the TMC, which is seeking to expand its footprints and enter national politics, is in touch with Congress legislators from the northeastern state. Reports suggest that poll strategist Prashant Kishor’s team, which is tasked with helping the TMC spread its presence at national level, are in talks with Sangma.
However, Sangma, who is now the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Tamal Saha said that they will seek to resolve certain internal issues within the party first before considering the possibility of joining the TMC.
As per reports, Sangma is miffed with the Congress’ top leadership for allegedly being sidelined. He had also expressed resentment over the appointment of Lok Sabha MP Vincent H Pala as the president of the party’s state unit.
The Congress party is struggling with political upheaval and defections in several states ahead of next year’s Assembly polls.
Earlier this month, senior party leader and former Goa chief minister and Luizinho Faleiro joined the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC in Kolkata.
