Congress leader Rahul Gandhi today failed to get relief from the Supreme Court in the ‘Modi Surname’ defamation case. The apex court listed the matter for the next hearing on August 4. A Supreme Court bench of justices BR Gavai and PK Mishra today heard the plea filed by Rahul Gandhi. The bench issued a notice to Gujarat Government and others on the plea of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi challenging the Gujarat High Court order where the HC declined to stay his conviction in the criminal defamation case. A Surat court had sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail in the ‘Modi surname’ remark case but had granted bail allowing him to explore available legal alternatives.
Congress leader and senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi had sought an urgent hearing in the matter and brought the case to the attention of a bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud on July 18.
Supreme Court also issued notice to complainant & Gujarat BJP MLA Purnesh Modi on Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking their response.
