Hyderabad: Indian Badminton player Saina Nehwal failed to recover from leg blisters sustained during Australian Open Super Series triumph last month which cause her unable to join team for Common Wealth Games 2014.
Saina said, “It is an extremely difficult decision but an important one.”
She said, “I had suffered a groin injury during the first round in Australia and then there were those blisters on my leg but I still won the title. After I came back I had two and a half weeks but I took one week to recover, so hardly got a week to train. So, I decided to pull out. It’s heartbreaking for me as well.”
Saina Nehwal had got fame by winning the gold medal for India at the Delhi Games in 2010.
An official of Badminton Association of India said, “For the last three days we have been trying to convince her. If she goes even with 50% of fitness she can win a gold for us. Apart from Saina there are no big players among the Commonwealth countries. So far she has not agreed to be part of the squad. I don’t think she will change her mind.”
