Union ministry recommends Dhyan Chand name for Bharat RatnaNew Delhi: Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, on Today informed Lok Sabha that the Union Home Ministry has sent Bharat Ratna recommendation for late Major Dhyan Chand to the PMO, after receiving recommendations from several quarters.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju informed the Lok Sabha that the Union Home Ministry has sent recommendations for Bharat Ratna for late Major Dhyan Chand to the PMO after the MHA received recommendations from several quarters.

Dhyan Chand had won three Olympic gold medals for hockey for India between 1928 and 1936.

There has been speculation that former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is the frontrunner for the Bharat Ratna honour, followed by Subhash Chandra Bose. Meanwhile, other suggestions like those of Bhagat Singh and Veer Savarkar have also been made by the Congress and the Shiv Sena.

Considered as the greatest ever hockey player, Dhyan Chand helped India win three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics.  Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the country. It is awarded in recognition of exceptional service/performance of the highest order in any field.
