New Delhi: To pay the tributes to the author of the great epic Ramayana, which consists of 23, 000 shloka and seven cantos composed of about 480,002 words during 500 BC to 100 BC, Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated every year in India.
For treating it as a holy day, some of the States like Haryana observe the day as holiday and some of the Indian States and Government of India declare the day as restricted holiday (RH).

It is believed and said that Maharishi Valmiki gave shelter to Sita in his hermitage when Rama banished her. Lava and Kusha, the twin sons of Shri Ram were born to Sita in this hermitage.
Valmiki taught Ramayanato Kusha and Lava, who later sang the divine story in Ayodhya during the Ashvamedha Yagya congregation, to the pleasure of the audience, whereupon, King Shri Ram questioned who they were and later visited Valmiki’s hermitage to confirm if the Sita, the two children claimed as their mother was in fact his wife in exile.
Later, he summoned them to his royal palace. Lava and Kusha sang the story of Shri Ram there, and Shri Ram confirmed that whatever had been sung by these two children was entirely true.
It has been observed that Valmiki community is mainly found in Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat and worship Valmiki as their ancestor and as God.
The Vishnudharmottara Purana says that Valmiki was born in the Tetrayuga as a form of Vishnu who composed the Ramayana, and that people desirous of earning knowledge should worship Maharishi Valmiki.
