Sarpanch #kidnapped, killed by #militants in #J&K, body found in #SoporeSrinagar: The sarpanch belonging to ruling National Conference, who was kidnapped from Sopore district of J&K last night, has been shot dead by 5-6 unidentified militants, reports claimed today.

Ghulam Mohammad Mir (62) was abducted by six gunmen from his residence in Tarzoo area of Sopore town at around 9 pm, a police official said. According to the police, his body was recovered early in the morning today from a field in Shalabugh area of Sopore town.

Mir’s family had lodged a complaint with police following which a search operation was launched to rescue the kidnapped sarpanch. The kidnapping came three days after Sopore Assembly segment went to polls in the third phase of elections in the state.

The apple town, hitherto known as separatist stronghold, saw a turnout of 30 percent, which was 10 percent higher than 2008 assembly elections.
