Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has favoured death penalty for those responsible for the Mumbai hooch tragedy, in which at least 102 people have died. I want to see most severe punishment for the culprits (behind the hooch tragedy). They should be hanged,” an official of Chief Minister Office’s quoted Fadnavis as saying at a meeting of senior police officials here today.
Meanwhile, the main accused in the hooch tragedy was arrested in the national capital on Tuesday and handed over to Mumbai police by a court. The 26-year-old bootlegger named Mansoor Ali, alias Atiq was arrested from Seelampur area in east Delhi.
Mansoor was on the run after the death toll began mounting and was being sheltered by a “link”. On getting a tip-off, Mumbai police sought help of their Delhi counterparts and succeded in tracking down the link, who gave information leading to Mansoor’s arrest. Mansoor, according to sources, had smuggled the hooch to Mumbai from Gujarat, where liquor is prohibited. His father too was claimed to have been involved in the illegal trade.
Reportedly, eight police officials have been suspended for ‘negligent approach while discharging their duty’ for not being able to check the production of spurious liquor and the case is being looked into by the crime branch. The Mumbai Police crime branch has destroyed around 10,000 litres of alcohol after the unfortunate incident.
