PM #NarendraModi  starts day of poll campaigning in #Assam with #Kamakhya  temple visit #Guwahati:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched his day-long campaign for the second phase of the Assam assembly elections by visiting the famous Shakti Shrine Kamakhya temple, situated atop the Nilachal hills, on Friday morning.

PM Modi arrived at the temple around 10 am amid tight security. Later, after offering puja at the temple, he tweeted: “Prayed to Maa Kamakhya for the development of our nation and the well-being of our citizens.”

Modi arrived in the city on Thursday evening. Many top BJP leaders met him later that night to brief him on the state’s poll situation.

The Navratri festivities, aimed at honouring the goddess Durga, began at the Kamakhya temple on Friday. The Prime Minister, a known devotee of the goddess, had visited the Tirupati Balaji temple last year.

The Kamakhya temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to mother goddess Kamakhya, is one of the 51 pithas of the Hindu religion. The Kalika Purana – an ancient work in Sanskrit – describes Kamakhya as the yielder of all desires, the young bride of Lord Shiva, and the provider of salvation.

The Prime Minister will address four rallies across central and lower Assam – Raha in Nagaon district, Rangiya in Kamrup district, Sarbhog in Barpeta district and Maligaon in Guwahati – in the last leg of campaigning for this particular phase of the elections.

The BJP hopes to ride the anti-incumbency wave against the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress government in Assam, where it stands a good chance of winning power in the upcoming assembly elections.
