New Delhi: All India Muslim Personal Law Board vice president Maulana Kalbe Sadiqui has opposed the prevailing system of ‘triple talaq’ practice in the Muslim community.

Giving his opinion on the triple talaq system, Sadiqui said, “Until both man and woman call for a divorce, action shouldn’t be taken.”

“Like Hinduism, we have a lot of sections. Even if husband says “talaaq” 3 lakh times it won’t be valid,” the maulana said.

The Supreme Court on Monday gave the central government four weeks’ time to file its response on the right of Muslim women in matrimonial matters relating to divorce, including triple talaq, and maintenance.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) had in its response on September 2 defended both polygamy and triple talaq saying that courts have no jurisdiction to examine the issue as it relates to their religion based on the Quran and Sharia law.

Notably, All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board (AIMWPLB) president Shaista Ambar has demanded to abolish the triple talaq system.

Talaq-e-bidat is a Muslim man divorcing his wife by pronouncing the word “talaq” more than once in a single tuhr (the period between two menstruations) or in a tuhr after coitus or pronouncing an irrevocable instantaneous divorce at one go (unilateral triple-talaq).
