Bhubaneswar: the northern and western parts of the state witnessed heavy rainfall and floods and the water level of Budhabalang, Baitarani and Rusikulya rivers has risen, According to reports. A day after cyclone Phailin left a trail of destruction across the state and began moving inland, the Odisha government on Monday launched rescue operations after heavy rainfall caused massive floods forcing thousands of evacuations. Severe floods took place in Mayurbhanj and Baripada districts after waters in Budha Balanga and Baitarani rivers crossed the danger marks and overflowed. Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak and Balasore districts are one of the worst affected districts. Most of the Baripada area in Mayurbhanj district has been submerged under water due to the overflowing river Budhabalang.
The state government has launched relief operations in the flooded areas to rescue the stranded people and move them to safety. Air packets are also being dropped by helicopters in the flooded areas. National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said that the cyclone, that affected around 17 villages and displaced 90 lakh people, is now moving towards Odisha-Chhattisgarh border. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a flood alert in the 28 districts of Bihar as heavy rainfall could lead to the water level in Kosi and Gandak rivers cross the danger mark. The heavy rains are expected in the next 48 hours due to atmospheric pressure by Cyclone Phailin. Massive rains and high velocity winds are also expected in Jharkhand, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh.
