Union minister Smriti Irani was reminded that "Karnataka is also part of India"NEW DELHI: Union minister Smriti Irani was reminded yesterday by a BJP colleague that “Karnataka is also part of India”, and the once irascible but now mellow minister took it on the chin on Twitter.

To be sure, the comment from CT Ravi, a BJP legislator from Karnataka, was in a lighthearted vein.

Irani’s Ministry of Textiles yesterday launched the ‘eDhaga’ App, “to enable easy access to info for weavers on procurement of yarn.” To begin with, the App was launched in Hindi, English and Telugu. Soon, ‘eDhaga’ is also expected to be available in Tamil, Bengali, Oriya, Urdu and Assamese.

But not in Kannada. And that’s what Ravi’s tweet was about.

Irani wasn’t always this sanguine. She wasn’t one to take criticism lightly. Not long ago, when she was HRD minister, Irani got into a Twitter row over the use of the word ‘dear’ as a salutation.

Irani bristled at the question but decided to react to the use of the word “dear” instead.

Before that, Irani got into an unseemly Twitter war – without any provocation, at the start – by attacking a Congress spokeswoman and ridiculing her party for losing the Assam Assembly polls in May.
