All matches at the Australian Open to be suspended after the tournament referee applied the extreme heat policy at Melbourne Park as temperature increases.
Notify that on day four of the grand slam temperatures have hit 43.3 degrees which cause tournament referee Wayne McEwen has deemed conditions unsafe for players.
The roofs on both courts Rod Laver Arena and Hisense Arena were closed so play could continue.
It is the first time the extreme heat policy has been applied at the Australian Open since 2009, when the tournament was suspended on consecutive days with temperatures reaching as high as 45 degrees.
The announcement of Thursday came at 1.52pm. All matches on the outside courts were suspended once the set in progress was finished.
Play on the outside courts however, will not resume any earlier than 5pm.
