Mumbai, 5th April: An under-construction building collapsed in Shil Phata area of Thane on Thursday evening. The death toll rose to 30 till Friday morning While 69 people were injured.
Thane police control room said the rescuers are fear that some victims are still trapped under debris. Rescuers scrambled through the night to save people feared trapped under the debris, an official said on Friday.
The condition of at least eight of the injured is serious, a Thane municipal corporation official said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar are likely to visit the collapse site later on Friday.
The Daighar police have lodged cases against the developers of the seven-storey building, Salil Jamadar and Khalil Jamadar, who are reported to be absconding along with their families, under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of IPC. Efforts were on to trace them.
The building collapsed at around 6:30 pm, the officials said, adding, the injured were rushed to various hospitals. At the time of incident, there were around 35 families in the building an official said.
The injured were admitted to various hospitals including Thane Civil, CSM Civic hospital at Kalwa, Kalsekar hospital in Kalwa, while those in critical condition were shifted to Sion and JJ Hospital.
Civic officials said the building in Shil Dhaigar locality was unauthorised. They claimed that it was built on forest land and was occupied at least up to the fourth floor.
MNS legislator from Kalyan township of Thane, Ramesh Patil, alleged that he had complained to the municipal commissioner last week that the building was unauthorised and unfit for occupation, but no action was taken.
More than a dozen fire tenders along with over 24 ambulances were stationed at the site of the accident.
The operations were carried out under the supervision of Civic Commissioner RA Rajeev and District Collector P Velarasu.
