Mumbai: The western metropolis was put on high alert on Wednesday with the Met dept predicting heavy to very rain in Mumbai. Suburban trains are running late by 15-20 minutes on all three lines – central, western and harbor due to heavy rain which began from yesterday and still continued. Normal life was hit in many parts of the city.
Morning batch students are being sent back home while the afternoon batch has been suspended. Schools and colleges have been shut in some parts of the city.
There are also reports that most shops are yet to open and waterlogging at Hindmata, Napean Sea Road, Grant Road and Lokhandwala Complex.
The Meteorological Department has also predicted heavy rainfall along the Konkan coast in the next 60 hours. Santacruz has recorded 168.6 millimeters of rain in last 24 hours, while Colaba has recorded 158.6 millimeters of rainfall.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has advised by Met Dept. to Mumbaikars against venturing outdoors unless absolutely essential. All agencies concerned with disaster management, relief and rescue operations have been put in a state of high alert.
IMD Mumbai director VK Rajeev said that entire Maharashtra is expected to get heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 12-72 hours. “Heavy to very heavy rainfall will occur at many places in Konkan, central Maharashtra and Marathwada. Similarly, Mumbai will experience heavy to very heavy rains in the next 72 hours,” Rajeev said.
As per the IMD, high tide reached 4.9 meters is expected at 1.27 pm today afternoon.
