Mumbai: An explosion had been took place in a submarine of Indian Navy. The submarine had caught fire after the explosion and sank last night. The accident has happened at INS Sindhurakshak in which 18 personnel including three officers are missing. Major fire took place on board INS Sindhurakshak which is a Kilo class submarine of the Indian Navy.
Defence Minister A K Antony said, “I feel sad about those navy personnel who have lost their lives in service of the country.”
Navy spokesperson PVS Satish said, “There are some people who are trapped on board, we are in the process of trying to rescue them, we suspect it to be in the range of 18.”
Satish said, “We will not give up until we get to them.”
The Navy has ordered a board of inquiry into the dockyard fire. The cause of the explosion and blaze is still not known.
Reports claimed that the submarine has been damaged extensively in the fire, which was brought under control with the help of 16 fire tenders at around 3 AM.
Many sailors who were on the submarine had jumped off to make themselves safe. Injured sailors were taken to the Colaba naval hospital INHS Ashvani.
The fire brigade and other emergency services have been immediately alerted by deputy chief office PS Rahandale who was on leave and attending a private engagement near Gateway of India promenade.
