New Delhi: Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had not described his Indian counterpart as a ‘Dehati Aurat’ (village woman), as had been claimed earlier, Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir on Sunday said. In an apparent retraction of his derogatory statement, said to have been flagged on the micro-blogging site Twitter, and on Pakistan television, which prompted an angry and firm rejoinder from the BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi at a rally in New Delhi, Mir said: “Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif didn’t make any derogatory remark on Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.”
Mir issued the statement after the two Prime Ministers met in New York on Sunday. Mir’s allegation became the central focus of debate in the political sphere in India, after Modi brought up the accusation at a rally in New Delhi this afternoon. The controversy was rooted in a comment made by on Geo TV alleging that Sharif had used the term “dehati aurat” to describe Dr Manmohan Singh, while meeting him and an Indian journalist on Saturday.
