New Delhi: The rupee down 9 paise to Rs 61.55 against the US dollar in early trade on Friday on the Interbank Foreign Exchange market due to appreciation of the American unit against other currencies overseas. Increased demand for the dollar from importers also put pressure on the rupee. Dealers attributed the rupee’s fall to dollar gains against the euro overseas and a lower opening in the domestic stock market. The rupee had closed 13 paise higher at Rs 61.46 a dollar in Thursday’s trade after banks and exporters sold the US currency as it weakened overseas. Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex fell 65.38 points, or 0.32 per cent, to 20,660.05 in early trade on Friday.
