Maoists kill journalist in market in Bastar village

photoNew Delhi: A senior reporter Sain Reddy, of local daily had been killed on Friday in weekly market by Maoists in Basaguda village of Bijapur district of Bastar region of Chhattisgarh.

Reddy was working with Deshbandhu in early 50s which was one of the oldest newspapers of Chhattisgarh.

Journalists of Bijapur had expressed outrage and called for Bastar bandh on Saturday in his statement. S Karimuddin, president of Bastar Patrakar Sangh said, “We condemn the incident and will soon declare our plan of action”.

Karimuddin said that Reddy was caught in the police-Maoist conflict. Police had arrested Reddy suspecting him to be a Maoist informer about six or seven years ago. However police has released him as they could not find any evidence against him.

Reddy was visiting his home for the weekly market on Friday. He was at his home when around 1.30 PM, 3-4 youths attacked him with axes and other sharp weapons. Local said, as he ran towards the nearby police station, the assailants chased him and attacked him again. He died on way to hospital.

Karimuddin also said that Maoists had burnt down village home of Reddy and force him to flee to Andhra Pradesh but Reddy returned to his home village after some time and was working with Deshbandhu since then. Karimuddin said, “We owe allegiance to none, still both sides suspect us.”

Meanwhile it is second killing of a journalist this year by Maoists in Bastar.
