New Delhi: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi met RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Thursday, giving a fresh impetus to talk of an alliance between the two parties in Bihar ahead of the upcoming general elections.
The meeting was significant especially since Gandhi was earlier said to be not so excited about an alliance with Prasad, who has been convicted in the fodder scam case, at a time when corruption has become a key issue.
The comments reflected a pitch for a secular plank against Modi’s development-cum-Hindutva plank and the Aam Aadmi Party’s anticorruption appeal. Narendra Modi is an apolitical man, Prasad said, He can never be Prime Minister of India.”
The RJD chief has been hard at work trying to woo the Congress in order to put up a joint secular front in the upcoming election to take on both BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and his old bete noire Janata Dal (U) leader Nitish Kumar.
He had earlier met Sonia Gandhi after cooling his heels in Delhi for about a week and visiting the riot relief camps in Muzaffarnagar in western Uttar Pradesh.
RJD leader Lalu Prasad said, The Congress could demand and get as many as 10 seats in Bihar, even though their support base doesn’t really merit it. Who did not wish to be named?
