To stay the release of 3D version of Sholay, Ramesh Sippy moves to SC

SholayNew Delhi: The veteran producer of Bollywood, Ramesh Sippy had approached to the Supreme Court on Thursday and seeking a stay on the release of the 3D version of ‘Sholay’, the blockbuster movie of 1975 over the copyright dispute. The 3D version of ‘Sholay’ had been made by his nephew Sasha.

A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam, before whom the matter was mentioned for an urgent hearing by senior advocate Shyam Divan, agreed to list the case for hearing tomorrow.

Ramesh Sippy had moved the Supreme Court challenging the order of Bombay High Court of refusing to stay the release of the film which is scheduled for tomorrow.

Notify that Ramesh Sippy had directed the original movie ‘Sholay’, is in dispute with his nephew Sasha over the rights of the film which was released in 1975.

Sasha had recently announced making a 3D version of the movie which is to be distributed by Jayantilal Gada.

However, Sasha argued in the High Court that Sippy had no rights over the movie and he could not oppose the production and release of Sholay’s 3D version.

Sasha and other members of the Sippy family contended that they were associated with Sholay Media and Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. which was formed in 2000.

They claimed that Ramesh Sippy never made any copyright claims when their company had dealt with and commercially exploited Sholay’s rights several times earlier.
