Kabul: As elections in Afghanistan inch closer, a group of militants on Saturday attacked the election commission headquarters in Kabul. According to police report, the militants opened fire on main compound of election commission and later bombarded it with explosives,
There have been some explosions and gunfire heard near the IEC (Independent Election Commission), we are investigating it,” said Sayed Gul Agha Hashemi, head of Kabul police’s criminal investigation branch.
On Friday, Taliban militants attacked a Kabul guesthouse used by a US anti-landmine charity, killing two people. Friday’s assault was the fourth significant attack this year in Kabul targeting foreigners or places where foreigners congregate.
The Taliban have vowed a campaign of violence to disrupt the polls on April 5, urging their fighters to attack polling staff, voters and security forces in the run-up to Election Day.
