Lucknow: In what is likely to create more trouble for him, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav reacted angrily when asked about the spate of rape cases in his state on Friday. “Have you faced any problem? You are safe, why are you bothered?” he asked a journalist who sought information on the rising cases in the state. “No other state has the kind of police control room we have here. If there is any incident, we will take action,” he said.
His acerbic remark comes in the wake of triple rapes being reported in the state over the past 24 hours and one assault case. In Etawah, Akhilesh’s hometown, a girl was raped and her mother was assaulted brutally by the rapist a while later. Reports said that the woman was so badly thrashed up that she lost her power of speech. Doctors said that the woman suffered multiple fractures and the police has arrested only one accused so far.
In Badaun, two teenage sisters were gangraped and hanged. The police arrested three, including the main accused. Two policemen were sacked from their jobs for dereliction of duty while two accused are still on the run. In Azamgarh, a minor was gangraped by four men. An FIR was filed but no arrests have been made till now.
The Home Ministry has demanded swift action in the Badaun incident and Akhilesh has promised that the case will be sent to a fast-track court. Maneka Gandhi, the Women and Child Welfare Minister in the Narendra Modi government, has said she will order a CBI probe if that is what the people want. “If people want a CBI enquiry, then I will ensure that, she said.
