New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi who contested on the Varanasi seat as well as the Vadodara seat in the Lok Sabha elections has decided to retain the Varanasi seat and vacate the seat from his home state of Gujarat.
Modi had won both the seats with a thumping majority. He had contested against Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal and Congress leader Ajai Rai in Varanasi.
He had won the Vadodara seat by the biggest margin of 5 lakh, seventy thousand votes. He is said to have informed the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party about his decision.
While his win in Vadodara was on expected lines, the fight in Varanasi was said to be tough. However, he defeated his closest rival Arvind Kejriwal by a margin by over 4 lakh votes. The BJP won 73 of 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh.
