Bihar: District magistrate Anupam Kumar alerted the district administrations of Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Samastipur and both the Champarans (east and west) to make suitable arrangements at the hospitals to treat AES-affected children, even as the toll crossed the 100 mark on Tuesday.
Kumar’s step followed the request of Dr GK Thakur, superintendent of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH). Thakur put in his request following admission of a large number of children from large parts of north Bihar, all afflicted with the killer disease, which is yet to be diagnosed fully.
Dr Thakur said he had requested the DM as the beds at paediatric intensive care units (PICU) were full and overflowing. “Besides, we have experienced that many of these lives could have been saved had they been given treatment within one hour of the onset of AES.
He said, it takes too long to bring children to the SKMCH, Muzaffarpur from places afar, one reason why the toll is so high.He added that the SKMCH had been constrained for space, given the high number of affected children and providing beds to all was becoming impossible.
About 73 more kids are still undergoing treatment at different hospitals, including at the SKMCH, sadar hospital and Kejriwal Matri Sadan (KMS).
the CS said, Officials of the health department had confir med only 87 deaths till 10am on Tuesday. Confer Ming only eight deaths till 10am, civil surgeon Dr Gyan Bhushan said 322 cases of AES had been reported so far. “Of them, 87 kids have succumbed to the killer disease and 73 are still being treated, while 137 have been discharged after treatment.
