Raipur: Steel Minister Narendra Singh Tomar will visit the Bhilai Steel Plant today; a day after a gas leak at the facility killed six persons and injured 35 others.
The incident happened at 6:30 pm yesterday when poisonous gas leaked from blast furnace-GCP due to breakdown in a water pump. Among the six killed at the steel plant located in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district were two Deputy General Managers.
Inspector General of Police (Durg Range) Pradeep Gupta said CISF personnel were among the injured, apart from workers and officials of the public sector plant. The affected were admitted to the nearby Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital. The seriously ill were admitted to ICU.
Raman Singh yesterday expressed grief over the incident and said best medical care will be provided to those affected in the incident. Set up with the help of erstwhile USSR in 1955, Bhilai Steel Plant is India’s first and main producer of steel rails, as well as a major producer of wide steel plates and other steel products.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed grief over the tragedy, tweeted Chief Minister Raman Singh.
