New Delhi: Senior Congress MP Kamal Nath took oath as the pro-tem Speaker at the Rashtrapati Bhawan at 10 am on Wednesday.
The first day of the 16th Lok Sabha was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who said that he government will make all efforts in this temple of democracy to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of people.
After observing a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed member, the House was adjourned for the day. Kamal Nath will preside over the Lok Sabha proceedings till the election of a new speaker on June 06.
As per the earlier schedule, newly-elected members were to be administered oath today and on June 05. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiyah Naidu said the Lok Sabha might sit late June 5 now. The oath-taking by members will continue till the afternoon of June 6.
Shortly after that the Lok Sabha paid homage to late Union Minister Gopinath Munde who passed away on Tuesday in a car crash in Delhi. Munde would be cremated in his village in Maharashtra today with full state honours.
