Hamirpur: A shocking incident had again raised the question of safety and security of woman in Uttar Pradesh which also reflect the failure of governance in state. A woman from Odisha had been illegally sold through a public auction in Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The auction took place in community centre in Jarakhar village of Hamirpur and continued till Thursday night.
About fifty persons had taken participation in the auction and the woman had been ultimately given to the highest bidder who paid 25,000 and purchase her.
According to reports, the woman had been purchased by Sohanlal Valmiki, a resident of the same village, who had worked in Odisha for few months. Valmiki had brought the woman to the village a few days back.
He had exploited the woman for some days and decided to sell her through an auction to get the best price of her.
Hundreds of curious onlookers were present during the auction of woman. The initial bid for the woman was 10000 which went up to 15000 but woman had refused to go with an old man who bid for 15000.
After her refusal, Brijbhan Kori of the same village brought her for Rs. 25, 000.
Police came to know about the incident on Friday and a team visited the spot but could not find anyone there.
A police officer said, “We have reports of such an auction. We are investigating it. Stern action will be taken against the guilty if the reports turn out true.”
