8-member thinktank likely to replace plan panel: SourcesNew Delhi: The new entity which will replace Planning Commission is likely to have eight members and include economists, representatives from the social sector, government, industry and academics.

Sources said the government is working out the details of the panel which is expected to be announced within a few weeks. Out of the eight members, four would be from the government and four from outside.

This eight-member body will comprise of top economists, social activist and scientist. Out of the eight members, four will be permanent, while the rest will be a part of the panel on a rotational basis.

Prime Minister Modi had during his Independence Day address to the nation announced that

The 64-year old Planning Commission, a vestige of socialist era, would be soon replaced with a new institution to address the current economic challenges and strengthen the federal structure.

Recently, he had invited deas from the general public to shape the new institution that will replace the Planning Commission. The PMO has set up an Open Forum to collect ideas from the people.
