New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi could chair a high-level meeting at Yojana Bhawan on August 26 to finalise the broad contours of the new institution that will replace the Planning Commission.
An official said, “The sense we are getting is that the prime minister could himself chair this meeting.”
He also stated that instructions had been issued for glitch-free administrative as well as technical arrangements for the occasion.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced in its Independence Day speech to replace the Planning Commission.
He said to demise of the body that was set up through an executive order in 1950 by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and served as a link between the centre and the states.
Planning Secretary Sindhushree Khullar is overseeing the arrangements for the meeting. Official claimed that government is likely to outline identity as well as structure and function of the new institution in this meeting.
Prime Minister Modi has sought suggestions on the role and shape of the commission from the public.
The Planning Commission, which will be represented by Khullar, will raise the issue of the role of the new institution vis-a-vis the states and its thinking on the National Development Council (NDC), the highest federal decision-making body in the country.
The commission has been answerable to the NDC, which comprises chief ministers of all states and administrators of the union territories, besides the members and deputy chairman of the Planning Commission.
