New Delhi: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had cleared its stand over the Insurance Law Amendment Bill and said that there are no double standards by the Congress in it.
Notify that Finance Minister had given three options to Congress i.e. to approve, reject or amend the Bill on the floor of the House but not to delay it. Jaitley said that he hoped that higher counsel prevails in the Congress as he had borrowed former finance minister P Chidambaram’s words in the Insurance Bill.
Jaitley said, “We exactly borrowed Chidambaram’s language. We have given three options to the Congress on the Insurance Bill.”
Jaitley and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu had represented the government’s side at the all-party meeting. However, the meeting failed to resolve the deadlock and remained inconclusive.
Nationalist Congress Party leader Praful Patel said that parties would meet again in the next two days to discuss the possible formulation of the Bill. Leaders from Congress, TMC, BJD, JDU, AIADMK, SP, BSP along with others attended the meeting.
The Bill proposes to raise the FDI cap in the insurance sector from the present 26 per cent to 49 per cent. It was first proposed by the Congress-led UPA government and a total of 86 amendments were proposed.
Meanwhile BJP government is in a minority in the Rajya Sabha and it needs Congress’s help to pass the Bill.
