Srinagar: Anger is seething, and four Air Force helicopters, carrying supplies, could not land this morning at the helipad at the Governor’s residence, after threats of stoning. Angry people of flood-hit Srinagar had beaten up two rescue workers on Wednesday. Four helicopters carrying flood relief material could not land after angry locals threatened to throw stones at them.
Several people had been stranded in this area since Saturday night when water as high as 12 feet at some places as the might Jhelum broke its embankment.
Notify that two rescue workers were allegedly attacked on Monday evening by residents who alleged that help hadn’t reached soon enough to many of those stranded in floods. Their boats were also deflated.
One of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel attacked is reported to be seriously injured and has been flown to Chandigarh for treatment.
It has been reported that workers were attacked with sticks and their rubber boat was punctured with sharp objects.
Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah had described the situation as the worst floods in over a century.
Army and NDRF workers had rescued over 75,000 people but about six lakh in the state are still stranded in their homes or other buildings for three days now with food and other supplies running out fast. Messages for help and rescue continue to pour in.
CM Abdullah said, “I understand the anger but it is not true that nothing is happening…this situation is unprecedented.”
